Pioneering Social Change: The Inspiring Journey of Comrade M.V. Raghavan

Transforming Lives, Empowering Communities, MVR Ayurveda - Continuing the Legacy of a Visionary Leader

MVR Ayurveda is named after our founder MV Raghavan, a veteran Communist leader and a former minister in Kerala, who was popularly known by the sobriquet MVR. A firebrand and most respected leader, MVR was the General Secretary of the Communist Marxist Party and a prominent leader of CPI(M). Being a politician he served as the Minister of Co-operation, Kerala in 1991 and was also the Minister for Co-operation and Ports Kerala in 2001. Due to his utmost dedication to the state and its people he was elected consequently for the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the 1970s six times in a row.

MVR served as president of Pappinisseri Panchayath for 16 years. He was always socially committed. Being a responsible member he would always get into the problems of people, discuss the issues and find solutions for every single problem. He has always been a pioneer in the Co-operative industry and has put forth many Co-operative institutes in and around Kannur district. Pappinisseri Visha Chikitsa Society was one such initiative brought forth by MVR along with public support. In the early 60’s, snake bites were quite common around the districts of Kannur, as the medical facilities were quite low, death rate was also innumerable. Hence the idea of such a Visha Chikitsa Society was put forth before Pappinisseri Panchayat. The demise of a close friend, Pokkan Master due to a snake bite and the passing away of another communist leader Comrade Krishna Pillai also motivated MVR to escalate the process.

Visha Chikitsa Kendram

In the 1960s Pappinissery Visha Chikitsa society came into existence. The institute came into power soon after the heading up of MVR as President. All these started off with basic facilities. Overcoming many hurdles he had struggled quite hard to establish PVCS. The very renowned Kumaran Vaidyan was the main practitioner of PVCS in the initial days and he treated all patients free of cost. People from all over Malabar, Kasaragod, Kannur, and Kozhikode started coming for treatment hearing about the same. Later it was integrated with allopathic treatment to provide optimum benefit to the public.
It was quite common for people of during that period to bring the bitten snake along with them, as the practice was to identify the snake and prescribe the medicines in Ayurveda. Parassinikadavu Snake Park was such an initiative undertaken to rescue and rehabilitate the snakes which were brought along.

In association with Snake Park, an ayurveda hospital and medicinal factory was built. It was named after the prominent social worker Sri MK Ummar koya. In 2002 the MK Ummer Koya hospital was uplifted as a teaching institute and now it is known as MVR AYURVEDA MEDICAL COLLEGE.
